• Noul stat Euroamerica e ceea ce s-a format din uniunea teritoriilor cunoscute anterior drept America de Nord şi Uniunea Europeană, iar Noul Shanghai e ceea ce înainte era China şi Sud-Estul Asiei. Cele două noi unităţi statale ce există în viitorul anului 2084 se luptă între ele pentruputerea politică.
  Doug Quaid e un simplu muncitor la o fabrică, dar ale cărui nopţi sunt chinuite de coşmaruri violente din cauza cărora bărbatul începe să suspecteze că el este un spion a cărui memorie a fost ștearsă şi a cărui personalitate a fost modificată.
  Doug nu îşi poate da seama însă de partea cui a fost spion şi de partea cui a luptat şi nici nu ştie cât de importante erau amintirile ce i-au fost șterse.
